A UNESCO World Heritage site, Mont Saint Michel is an island commune in Normandy in France. The island is about a kilometre away from the country’s north-western coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. Its area is 100 hectares (247 acres), and its population is 32 (2017).

Originally named Mont-Tombe, the name Mont Saint-Michel soon became dominant as the bishop of Avranches had a vision of the archangel St.Micheal and was compelled to start construction for an abbey on the island.

Jun 7, 2023 · Mont-Saint-Michel's storied past begins in 708 AD. After having a vision of the archangel Saint Michael, Bishop Aubert built the first sanctuary on the island (then known as Mont Tomb). On request from the Duke of Normandy, Benedictine monks settled on the island in 966 AD.
It became a state prison under Napoleon I and remained a prison until 1863. Finally, in 1874 the Mont Saint Michel abbey was declared a historic monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
